Because we wanted to see the beauty of Davao, we booked a tour from the tour packages offered in the conference. We decided to join the Tour 1 which consists the places, Philippine Eagle Center, Malagos Garden Resort, Bone Museum and People's Park. August 5, Friday, we left the Brokenshire Resort at noon and traveled for about an hour going to the Philippine Eagle Center. I enjoyed seeing the different eagle species housed in the center. It was quite rainy at that time but that doesn't stop us to explore and enjoy sights in the center. After that, our next stop was Malagos Garden Resort, which houses a butterfly sanctuary, Malagos Chocolate Museum, Abueva's masterpieces to name a few. Sadly, we weren't able to explore the whole resort because it is under renovation at that time in preparation for their reopening at the end of August, which is their anniversary.

PHILIPPINE EAGLE CENTER

The Philippine Eagle Center is home to the Philippine Eagles, which are held captive, cared for, and bred. It also houses other species of birds, mammals, and reptiles. The Center is tasked to protect and provide sanctuary to Philippine Eagles. While it is primarily a conservation breeding facility of the Philippine Eagle Foundation, it is open to the public for educational purposes. Simulating a tropical rain forest environment, the Center offers visitors a glimpse into the Philippines’s forest ecosystem. The facility is also considered a major tourist attraction in Davao City with its lush gardens and scenery.

Since the center is inside the DCWD watershed, everyone should pay a minimal fee of P5.00/person as the entrance fee for the watershed. School groups with at least 30 students will be given a 10% discount and the same privilege is given to family with groups of 10.

MALAGOS GARDEN RESORT

Malagos Garden Resort is one of the most frequented destinations in Davao City. This paradise is quietly nestled in the cool highlands of Barangay Malagos in Calinan, Davao City, in a sprawling 12 hectare nature theme garden of towering forest trees and stately pine trees amid a rich diversity of flora and fauna of the City. Malagos Garden Resort also offers tour packages such as tour around Malagos for 7 hours which include going to The Philippine Eagle Center and the price ranges from P1,750.00/pax to P2,750.00/pax depending on how many pax are going. They also have the sightseeing at Malagos which is a half-day countryside tour and prices ranges from P1,250.00/pax to P2,150/pax. You can also avail their Malagos highlight tour which will bring you to two of Davao’s must see tourist attraction – The Philippine Eagle Center and the Malagos Garden Resort for P1,400.00 to P2,350.00 per person. Just like any other garden resort, Malagos Garden Resort is equipped with hotel facilities in a nature environment. It has 21 standard cottages which can accommodate 4 to 5 guests for P2,400/room/night inclusive of breakfast good for four guests. Delux cottages can accommodate 6 to 10 guests for P3,300.00/room/night inclusive of breakfast for 6 guests. They also have 2 superior rooms which can accommodate 6 to 10 guests for P4,200.00/room/night inclusive of breakfast for 6 guests. Their Narra Cottage has 2 big rooms that can accommodate 50 guests each room for P350.00/person/night maximum of 25 persons per room.

How to get there

Malagos Garden Resort is about 27 kilometers, or 30 to 45 minutes drive from downtown city proper, and some 32 kilometers from the Davao International Airport. There are buses and L300 vans which leave from Bankerohan terminal every 15 minutes. The terminal is located at the corners of Quirino Avenue and San Pedro Extension, Bankerohan, at the back of International Bank.
